Description

Pairing nice spread on the date and IN GOD WE TRUST with evidence of die clashing, WDDO-007 on the 1988 Philadelphia Lincoln Memorial cent combines its doubled die characteristics with reverse clash remnants on the reverse. Die clash remnants appear in the 3rd and 9th bays of the Lincoln Memorial — the recessed architectural spaces between the Memorial's columns — where traces of obverse design elements were transferred to the reverse die during a strike event that occurred without a planchet between the dies. A scratch connecting the E in ONE to the C in CENT provides an additional reverse attribution marker. The obverse carries no significant die markers beyond the doubling itself. The presence of clash marks indicates that this die pair experienced at least one planchet feed failure during production, an event that leaves permanent impressions of each die's design on the opposing die face. Clash marks on Lincoln Memorial cent reverses are particularly diagnostic because the Memorial's columned architecture creates distinct bay spaces where transferred obverse elements — typically traces of Lincoln's profile or LIBERTY lettering — appear in predictable locations. These clash remnants, combined with the doubled die characteristics, give WDDO-007 a dual-error identity that appeals to collectors interested in die-to-die interaction events. Struck at Philadelphia on copper-plated zinc planchets at 2.5 grams and 19mm.
