1988 (P) Lincoln Memorial Cent - Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-009 / DDO-003

Description

DDO-003, which Wexler numbers WDDO-009, holds the FS-101 designation in the Cherrypickers' Guide and is a doubled die obverse on the 1988 Philadelphia Lincoln Memorial cent, with doubling on the lower ear. Wexler writes the number FS-01-1988-101. Wexler's Coins and Die Varieties describes a strong northward Class IV spread that shows as a heavily doubled lower ear, with some doubling in the hair right around the ear. Its obverse markers are many die scratches above and below LIBERTY, most running west to east; many more, running every which way, left of the upper head in the field; a horizontal die scratch under the N of IN, a die gouge jutting from the middle of the left side of the G in GOD, and a die scratch running NE from the lower nose. The reverse is in an early die state with no markers noted. Christopher Beck submitted the coin. CONECA lists the die as 3-O-VIII and Crawford as CDDO-008; its Coppercoins number is 1988P-1DO-010. VarietyVista, also crediting Christopher Beck, describes a strong spread to the south showing as an extra lower earlobe. It lists the reverse as its design variety RDV-005 and uses marker codes UVC-3025 and DMR-010.
