1988 Doubled Die Obverse DDO-002

Description

Presenting strong spread across both the date and IN GOD WE TRUST, DDO-002 on the 1988 Philadelphia Lincoln Memorial cent affects a wider zone of the obverse design than the more localized doubling seen on DDO-001. The involvement of the motto in addition to the date indicates that the hub rotation during the die-making process was sufficient in magnitude to produce visible separation across a broader arc of the die face, extending from the date area at the lower obverse up through the motto field above Lincoln's head. Class II hub doubling of this scope makes DDO-002 one of the more collectible varieties for the date, as the spread on IN GOD WE TRUST provides a second, independent confirmation zone that is readily examined even on circulated specimens where date doubling might be softened by wear. Cataloged as UVC-2409 and DMR-004, this die was paired with a reverse of the RDV-005 design generation.
