1987 (P) Lincoln Memorial Cent - Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-002

Description

1987 WDDO-002 is a doubled die obverse on the 1987 Lincoln Memorial cent, cataloged by the Wexler team. The date and IN GOD WE TRUST show extra thickness with weak separation lines. Lincoln's eye is doubled, a clear notch shows on the lower right of TRUST's R, and the upper hair details have some extra thickness. At obverse Stage A, weak vertical scratches show inside the ear; Wexler notes they can be seen on every recorded stage. Obverse Stage B is the same as Stage A, and at obverse Stage C many scratches, mostly NNW/SSE, cover the obverse. On the reverse at Stage A, a short gouge heads NW off the Memorial's lower left corner, and a small gouge (dot) lies right of the lower part of CENT's C. Reverse Stage B is a new reverse die: a small gouge sits inside the top of UNITED's U, and two short diagonal scratches climb to the roof off the sixth column's upper right. At reverse Stage C, two strong parallel scratches link UNITED's E to the upper left part of the first E in E PLURIBUS UNUM, and a strong scratch lies inside the upper part of ONE's O. John A. Conway submitted Stage A and Stage B, and Peter Beane and Jennifer Casazza submitted Stage C. Wexler lists no cross-references.
