1987 (P) Lincoln Memorial Cent - Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-001

Description

1987 WDDO-001 is a doubled die obverse on the 1987 Lincoln Memorial cent, cataloged by the Wexler team. Wexler describes a spread toward the center on the date and on the right part of the bust's lower edge. At obverse Stage A, a gouge lies between TRUST's S and T, a short scratch heads NE off the top of the bowtie, and right of the second T in TRUST there is a short vertical scratch. At obverse Stage B, heavy abrasion shows on the die: many scratches run ENE off the front of the bust, a strong scratch runs SW off the back of the neck, and many more run WSW off the back of the bust. On the reverse at Stage A, two gouges sit inside the lower part of ONE's E, and an SSW/NNE scratch lies in the first Memorial bay. At reverse Stage B, the die shows heavy abrasion, with many scratches, mostly east-west, above and below the Memorial. John A. Wexler submitted Stage A, and Marvin L. Young submitted Stage B. Wexler lists no cross-references. Wexler includes it in its "Best Of" varieties.
