1987 (P) Lincoln Memorial Cent - Doubled Die Obverse DDO-003

Description

Rounding out the three-variety DDO census for the 1987 Philadelphia Lincoln Memorial cent, DDO-003 shows light extra thickness on LIBERTY and IN GOD WE TRUST with the strongest expression appearing on the date. This distribution — where the doubling is more visible on the date than on the letter groups — points to a hub shift axis that concentrated displacement toward the lower obverse where the date digits reside, while the upper legends received a glancing effect that registered as subtle thickening without the pronounced spread seen at the date. Cataloged as UVC-2401 and DMR-004, DDO-003 completes a tight sequential block (UVC-2399 through 2401, DMR-002 through 004) that encompasses all three 1987-P doubled die obverses, indicating the entire trio was documented as a group. Cherry-pickers searching 1987-P cents for this variety should focus initial examination on the date digits, where the strongest doubling provides the most efficient screening criterion before confirming the lighter effects on LIBERTY and IN GOD WE TRUST under higher magnification. Struck at Philadelphia (no mint mark) on copper-plated zinc planchets (97.5% zinc, 2.5% copper) at 2.5 grams and 19mm.
