Description

A spread toward the center on UNITED, QUARTER DOLLAR, AMERICA, the lower leaves, and branch ends makes WDDR-001 a multi-element doubled die reverse on the 1986 Philadelphia Washington Quarter. Attributed by the Wexler Team with variety ID 1986-P 25¢ WDDR-001, the reverse carries a diagnostic short vertical die scratch inside the lower O of OF, while no significant obverse markers have been noted. The centerward spread direction — where the doubled image moves inward toward the design center rather than outward — produces notching and extra thickness on the inner edges of letters and design elements. The 1986 Washington Quarter falls in the clad era between two periods of heightened numismatic interest: after the last silver-composition business strikes and before the State Quarters phenomenon began in 1999. Varieties from this quieter period of the series are less widely publicized but equally valid as collectible die marriages.
