Description

Documenting a reverse pre-cud on the 1985-P Roosevelt Dime, PC-10c-1985P-01R records a rim-area die crack that has isolated a fragment of the die face without that fragment separating or shifting. This first cataloged pre-cud for the 1985-P dime reverse captures a die in the transitional phase between normal service and catastrophic failure — the crack boundary is established but structural integrity remains just sufficient to hold the fragment in place during striking. Coins struck from such a die display a raised line following the crack path, mapping the geometry of the impending cud break. Each pre-cud's crack pattern is unique, determined by the stress distribution within that particular working die, and serves as the primary diagnostic for distinguishing one pre-cud from another.
