Description

Third reverse cud documented for the 1985 Philadelphia Mint Roosevelt Dime, CU-10c-1985P-03R indicates that at least three separate reverse dies developed rim fractures severe enough to break away during the 1985-P production run. Three cuds from a single date and mint reflects the high volume of dies consumed during the year, as each die pair eventually fatigues from the repeated impact forces of striking. When a section of the die rim separates, the resulting void fills with metal during striking to produce the characteristic raised featureless mass that defines a cud. The 1985-P Roosevelt Dime was struck in the standard copper-nickel clad composition that has been used since the Coinage Act of 1965 ended silver dime production.
