1985 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-002
ErrorDescription
Focused exclusively on the date numerals, WDDO-002 on the 1985 Philadelphia Lincoln Memorial cent shows a strong spread towards the center on the date — a more intense version of the date-only doubling seen on VarietyVista's DDO-003, classified as strong rather than light. No CONECA or Crawford cross-references have been established. The obverse is characterized by numerous die scratches running southwest to northeast in front of and behind the bust, creating a scratched-field backdrop that makes the doubled date stand out by contrast. The reverse lacks significant markers. The concentration of strong doubling solely on the date, with no detectable spread on LIBERTY, IN GOD WE TRUST, or the portrait, represents an unusual hub doubling geometry where the displacement vector aligned with the date's position while leaving other elements unaffected. For cherry-pickers, the strong date spread makes this variety detectable with a standard 5x loupe under normal lighting. Struck at Philadelphia on copper-plated zinc planchets at 2.5 grams from the 1985 mintage exceeding 5.65 billion cents (Wexler ID: 1985 1¢ WDDO-002).
