1985 Doubled Die Obverse DDO-003
Error
Description
The most subtle of the three VarietyVista doubled die obverses for the 1985 Philadelphia cent, DDO-003 exhibits a light spread confined to the date numerals alone — no motto, bust, or other design elements show detectable doubling. Assigned UVC-3309 and DMR-004, the jump in UVC number from the 2389-2390 range of DDO-001 and DDO-002 indicates this variety was cataloged significantly later, likely from a separate discovery or submission. Date-only doubled dies present a focused attribution challenge: the collector must distinguish genuine hub doubling from mechanical doubling (machine doubling), strike doubling, or die deterioration effects that can mimic true doubling on the date numerals. Key differentiators include the shelf-like quality of genuine hub doubling versus the flat, shelf-less appearance of strike doubling, and the presence of consistent spread direction across all affected numerals. The narrow scope of doubling on DDO-003 suggests a minimal hub displacement that fell below the detection threshold on all design elements except the date. Struck on copper-plated zinc planchets at 2.5 grams and 19mm from Philadelphia's 1985 output of approximately 5.65 billion cents.
