1984 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-010

Description

Focusing its doubling on a single facial feature, Wexler's 1984 1-cent WDDO-010 exhibits strong spread to the north on Lincoln's beard on the Philadelphia Lincoln Memorial cent. Northward spread on the beard creates a secondary outline above the primary engraved beard lines, giving the jaw area a visibly heavier, more textured appearance than a normal die produces. The beard is composed of numerous finely spaced lines in the original Brenner portrait, and even modest northward displacement multiplies these fine details, amplifying the visual effect beyond what the same degree of spread would produce on a broader design element. Obverse die markers include numerous scratches running southwest to northeast through the date and to the right of the bust, along with scratches running west-southwest to east-northeast to the left of the bust. No significant reverse die markers have been noted. No cross references to other attribution systems have been established. Produced at Philadelphia on copper-plated zinc planchets at 2.5 grams from the 1984 production of over 8.15 billion cents.
