1984 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-007

Description

Under the Wexler designation 1984 1-cent WDDO-007, this Philadelphia Lincoln Memorial cent shows spread towards center on the date and the right side of the bottom bust. The combination of date and bust-truncation doubling is consistent with an angular hub misalignment that produced measurable displacement in the lower portion of the die while diminishing toward the upper obverse. Obverse die markers include strong die scratches running north-northwest from the shoulder to the right of the Y in LIBERTY. On the reverse, numerous north-to-south scratches appear in the first, second, third, seventh, eighth, and ninth Memorial bays. A die crack runs from the right cornice to the rim between R and I in AMERICA, and a second die crack extends from the left cornice to the rim through the N of UNITED. These reverse die cracks indicate progressive die fatigue and help establish the production stage at which individual specimens were struck. Produced at Philadelphia on copper-plated zinc planchets at 2.5 grams from the 1984 mintage of over 8.15 billion cents.
