1984 Atypical Die Clash ADC-50C-1984-01

Description

Cataloged as ADC-50c-1984P-01 and attributed by MadDieClashes, this 1984 Philadelphia Mint Kennedy Half Dollar preserves evidence of multiple clash events on a single die pair. What appears to be the first clash occurred largely on center, and the heavy die abrasion applied afterward to eliminate the marks left only residual traces in front of Kennedy's face. The second clash, which is notably misaligned, slightly rotated, and tilted relative to normal die alignment, produced visible marks behind Kennedy's head and transferred part of his facial profile onto the reverse. This die was discovered by Barry Inman. Multiple clash events on a single die pair are uncommon because Mint personnel typically identified and corrected clash damage before it could recur. The fact that both a centered and a misaligned clash appear together makes this variety a valuable study piece for understanding how die contact geometry shifts between events. Kennedy Half Dollars from the mid-1980s were struck in large quantities at Philadelphia, though most entered collector channels rather than general circulation.
