Description

Among the several doubled die obverse varieties cataloged for the 1984 Philadelphia Lincoln Memorial cent, DDO-004 presents a medium spread visible on the date and the lower portion of Lincoln's bust. Hub doubling of this character arises when a working die receives two slightly offset impressions during the hubbing process, embedding a shifted secondary image into the die steel that transfers to every coin struck. A medium spread indicates the misalignment was substantial enough to produce clearly doubled profiles under moderate magnification, though it falls short of the dramatic separation seen on the most famous 1984 doubled die. The date numerals, being fine incuse features cut deeply into the die, tend to reveal even modest misalignment more readily than broader design elements, making the date a primary diagnostic zone for cherrypickers.
