Discovered by Dennis Fisher, DDO-001 on the 1983-S proof Washington quarter exhibits medium spread on LIBERTY — the first-listed and typically most prominent doubled die obverse for this date-mint combination. The DDO-001 designation indicates this was either the first variety reported or the strongest doubling documented for 1983-S proof quarters. As a proof coin from the San Francisco Mint, it was produced exclusively for annual proof sets, with each coin receiving multiple strikes from polished dies onto polished planchets to achieve mirror fields and frosted devices. Medium spread on LIBERTY suggests the hub misalignment was sufficient to produce discernible doubling visible under low magnification in good lighting. The 1983-S proof quarter was struck in copper-nickel clad composition, standard for circulating-composition proofs of this period. Proof doubled dies carry particular appeal because mirror fields and sharp detail often make doubling easier to detect and more visually striking than on business strike coins.
