1983 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-003

Description

Displaying a strong counterclockwise spread pivoting from approximately 3 o'clock, WDDR-003 produces doubling across an unusually broad range of reverse elements on the 1983 Philadelphia Lincoln Memorial cent — affecting UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, ONE CENT, E PLURIBUS UNUM, the flanking dots, and the lower left Memorial. Cataloged as Wexler WDDR-003 with no additional known cross-references, the strong characterization places this among the more visually prominent doubled die reverses for the date, exceeded only by the legendary WDDR-001. The 3 o'clock pivot positions the axis of minimal displacement at the right side, meaning elements at the left — including the lower left Memorial — show the greatest separation. The obverse carries die scratches running south-southwest to north-northeast above TY of LIBERTY and die scratches oriented northwest-southeast between WE and TRUST. The reverse shows heavy abrading along with two parallel die scratches running north-northwest from between the upper C and E of CENT, remnants of a die clash in the third bay of the Memorial, and die cracks at both the lower left and lower right Memorial extending to the rim.
