Description

ADC-1c-1983-06 is an atypical die clash on a 1983-P Lincoln Memorial cent, cataloged by Mad Die Clashes. It looks normal at first, but MDC found features that do not fit the typical clashes of the period and suggest the clash happened through a foreign object. MDC compares it to ADC-1c-1982-02, which has similar marks. On the obverse, bay 9 left a mark, with partial marks from bays 8 and 7, while bay 10's mark is barely visible at the end of Lincoln's chin; the gap in strength between bays 9 and 10 points to something out of the ordinary. Above the bay 3 mark is a struck-through area, with a different surface texture behind its edge, and the bay 2 mark has a dent on its right side where extra metal seems to have been pushed up. The reverse is just as odd. The back of Lincoln's head and the field around it left a strong mark, yet bay 2 shows no Y from LIBERTY, although a clash this strong should have left one. The mark from Lincoln's lower jaw line and the field is very strong in bay 8, but it stops there instead of continuing into bays 7 and 9, and the upper part of column 8 is clearly thinner than columns 7 and 9. Patches of different texture also show. A die crack running from the roof's right corner to the rim identifies the die. The coin belongs to Bob Piazza.
