1983 Atypical Die Clash ADC-1C-1983-04

Description
Cataloged by MadDieClashes as ADC-1c-1983-04, this 1983 Philadelphia Lincoln Memorial Cent exhibits three distinct clash events on a single die pair — an unusually complex clash scenario. Two of the clash events are closely spaced relative to each other, while the third is offset and slightly rotated from the other two, creating a layered pattern of transferred design elements. While all three clash events are difficult to discern on the obverse die, the reverse die shows the three events clearly, with overlapping transferred obverse design elements visible in the reverse fields. This coin is part of Joe Koelling's collection. Die clashing occurs when the obverse and reverse dies strike each other without a planchet between them, and each clash event leaves incuse impressions of one die's design on the opposing die face. Three separate clash events on a single die pair is exceptional — it indicates the die pair experienced at least three instances of empty-chamber strikes during its service life, each at a slightly different alignment, creating a palimpsest of transferred design elements. The 1983 Lincoln Cent is already historically notable as the year the composition permanently changed from 95% copper to copper-plated zinc, and production challenges during the transition may have contributed to operational incidents like repeated die clashing. Atypical die clashes with multiple events represent some of the most complex specimens in the MadDieClashes research catalog.
