Description

Third typical die clash cataloged by MadDieClashes for the 1982 Philadelphia Lincoln Memorial cent, TDC-1c-1982-03(LD) documents another instance of obverse and reverse dies making contact without a planchet between them on the Zinc Large Date subtype. Die clashes occur when the mechanical feed system fails to deliver a planchet into the striking chamber before the press completes its cycle, allowing the hardened steel dies to strike each other directly. The resulting transferred impressions — obverse design elements appearing in incuse on the reverse die and vice versa — create a permanent record of the event on every subsequent coin struck from that die pair. The Large Date zinc composition identifies this as a post-transition coin, struck from the copper-plated zinc planchets (2.5 grams) that replaced the heavier 95% copper bronze cents during mid-1982. Three distinct typical die clash varieties documented for the 1982 Philadelphia cent across its subtypes reflect the high production volume and the inherent probability of feed-system malfunctions in a year when production lines were adapting to new planchet specifications.
