1982 Typical Die Clash TDC-1C-1982-02LD

Description

Second in the MadDieClashes catalog of typical die clashes for the 1982 Philadelphia cent, TDC-1c-1982-02(LD) exhibits the familiar 5-degree rotation between dies that characterizes many Lincoln cent clashes — a slight angular misalignment at the moment of contact that is common enough to be considered the default clash geometry. This variety appears on the Large Date zinc subtype and was found in the collection of Joe Koelling. While die clashes of this configuration are not uncommon across the Lincoln Memorial series, the clash impression left by the Y of LIBERTY shows particularly well in bay 2 of the Memorial building, and the tilt of this impression reflects the 5-degree rotational offset between the two dies. The 1982 Large Date zinc cent represents one of the seven distinct cent varieties created by the mid-year composition change from 95% copper (3.1 grams) to copper-plated zinc (2.5 grams) and the concurrent use of large and small date punch styles at both Philadelphia and Denver.
