Description

The fifth documented cud for the 1982-P Jefferson Nickel, cataloged by Cuds on Coins with JNC file numbers from the Thurman and Margolis Cud Book. Cuds form when a section of the die rim fractures and separates during production, leaving a void that fills with planchet metal under striking pressure, producing a raised blank area that obliterates the design at that portion of the coin's edge. No cross-references to other catalogs are currently known. Five documented cuds for the 1982-P suggest this year experienced notable die failure rates at Philadelphia. At 75% copper and 25% nickel, 5.0 grams and 21.21 mm, the 1982-P still carried Schlag's original design. The Thurman and Margolis reference provides the foundational framework for systematic cud documentation across all U.S. denominations.
