Cross-referenced as JNC-82P-7 in the Jefferson Nickel Cud census, this CU-5c-1982P-02 variety documents a rim fracture on a 1982 Philadelphia nickel. Seven distinct cud-producing dies have been identified for the 1982-P date alone, reflecting prolific die consumption during a year of significant economic change. A cud originates from progressive die fatigue: microscopic cracks develop at stress points in the hardened steel, propagate through continued press cycles, and eventually cause a rim segment to detach. The resulting void produces coins bearing a raised, shapeless mass where the missing fragment once stood. Felix Schlag's design pairing of Jefferson's left-facing portrait with the south facade of Monticello had served the denomination for forty-four years by 1982. Struck on 75% copper, 25% nickel planchets weighing 5.0 grams, these coins circulated heavily.
