1981-S Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-001

Description

Displaying Class II distorted hub doubling, WDDR-001 of the 1981-S Proof Jefferson Nickel (Type 2, Clear S mintmark) shows a close spread on E PLURIBUS UNUM that increases in intensity from left to right across the motto. The graduated spread is characteristic of distorted hub doubling where the distortion varies across the die face. In 1981, the San Francisco Mint used two different reverse hub types for proof coins, and the Type 2 is distinguished by its Bulging S or Clear S mintmark with sharper, more defined letter forms than the Type 1. Reverse die markers include light die scratches on the rim below OF, providing a confirming diagnostic. Cross-referenced as Wexler Variety ID 1981-S WDDR-001 Proof and attributed by Brian A. Ribar, no obverse die markers were noted. The 1981 Type 2 proof is the scarcer of the two types, as it was produced in smaller quantities before being identified by collectors.
