Description
The 1981 (S) Proof Jefferson Nickel - Type 2 is a proof nickel struck at the San Francisco Mint, part of the Jefferson Nickels Original Design 1938-2003 series. With a mintage of 4.1 million, this is a scarce issue — the higher-mintage of the two mint variants, representing 0% of production. The obverse features Thomas Jefferson facing left and the reverse displays Monticello, Thomas Jefferson's Virginia estate. Struck after the transition from silver to clad coinage, as the Mint adapted to modern production methods and record-breaking mintages. As a proof issue, this coin was struck multiple times on specially prepared polished planchets using polished dies, producing mirror-like fields and frosted design elements prized by collectors. Struck at the San Francisco Mint, established during the California Gold Rush and now primarily producing proof and collector coins. Estimated market value is approximately $3.
