1981 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-001
Error
Description
Displaying Class II distorted hub doubling — a spread directed towards the center of the coin — the 1981 Philadelphia Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-001 shows its most prominent effect on the digits 19 in the date. Class II doubling produces a distinctive spread pattern where design elements appear to fan inward rather than exhibiting the parallel shelf-like separation characteristic of Class I pivot doubling, making it recognizable to experienced collectors even at moderate magnification. The die carries several authenticating markers: on the obverse, a small die gouge sits at the rim just to the left of the second T in TRUST, providing a quick confirmation point. The reverse die markers are more numerous — a short die gouge runs south from the top of the seventh bay of the Lincoln Memorial, a die scratch runs south-southwest from the bottom of the first S in STATES, and another die scratch runs parallel to the right side of the first column, with additional die scratches distributed throughout the reverse. No cross-references to other attribution systems have been identified; the variety is cataloged under Wexler Variety ID: 1981 1 cent WDDO-001. The 1981 Philadelphia cent was struck from 95% copper, 5% zinc planchets and carries the P mintmark. Attribution by Wexler Team.
