1981 Type I Counter Clash CCLTI-5C-1981-01

Description

CCL(TI)-5c-1981-01 This 1981P Jefferson nickel experienced two clash events that were offset from each other. This directional offset cause a counter clash (TI) to be formed. This coin is in the collection of Troy Watkins. The O of MONTICELLO can be seen twice in the image below. The O indicated by the black arrow is the counterclash. Notice that the counterclash O is raised, which is indicative of a clash mark that has been twice transferred. The O of MONTICELLO and the base line can be seen clashed into the field to the right of the back of Jefferson’s head. Both the base line and the roof line of Monticello can be seen clashed twice in the image to the left. Jefferson’s forehead can be seen clashed into the M of MONTICELLO and the F of FIVE. The dome of Monticello can be seen clashed below Jefferson’s chin. The clash marks seen to the left are commonly referred to as “Flames over Monticello”. These clash marks are formed by space in between Jefferson’s queue and the back of his neck. The front of Jefferson’s jacket and his collar can be seen clashed into the field above and to the left the Monticello dome. The leg of the F in FIVE can be seen clashed in the field to the left of Jefferson’s forehead. The base of Monticello can be seen clashed twice in the field in front of Jefferson’s eye.
