Documented by MadDieClashes as TDC-100c-1980D-01, this 1980-D Susan B. Anthony Dollar exhibits a typical die clash — an error created when the obverse and reverse dies strike together without a planchet between them, impressing elements of each die's design into the opposing die face. The clash marks are visible in two locations: behind Susan B. Anthony's neck, where the impression of the earth and the top of the eagle's right wing from the reverse die transferred onto the obverse, and a second mark created by the impression of Anthony's lips and chin transferring in the opposite direction. This particular specimen has been artificially toned, which does not affect the die clash attribution but is noted for accurate description. The Susan B. Anthony Dollar series, produced from 1979 through 1981 and briefly revived in 1999, was struck in copper-nickel clad at all three active mints. Die clashes are among the more commonly encountered mint errors because they can occur any time the press cycles without a blank in position, yet each clash event produces a unique pattern depending on die spacing and alignment at the moment of contact.
