1979 (P) Jefferson Nickel - Floating Die Clash FDC-5C-1979-01

Description

FDC-5c-1979-01 is a floating die clash on a 1979 Jefferson nickel, cataloged by Mad Die Clashes. A small piece of the obverse die face, carrying part of Jefferson's coat and the I of IN, broke away and flipped over, and the obverse die then struck it, which damaged the recess for the coat. What results is a faint, incomplete impression of the fragment's rim gutter, with what look like faint traces of design. MDC credits Frank Leone, as far as it knows, as the first collector to identify it as a floating die clash. Thurman and Margolis list the cud as JNC-79-1 in their 1997 Cud Book, and Cuds on Coins lists it as CU-5c-1979-01.
