1972 (D) Lincoln Memorial Cent - Floating Die Clash FDC-1C-1972D-01

Description

FDC-1c-1972D-01 is a floating die clash on the reverse of a 1972-D Lincoln Memorial cent, cataloged by Mad Die Clashes. Bob Piazza discovered it. In comments MDC publishes, Mike Diamond explains that the reverse die was struck by what was probably a die fragment from another striking chamber or from a die installed earlier. In the second case, the fragment would most likely have sat in a die recess and dropped out after a new die went in. Driven at an angle into the reverse die, the fragment left an impression of part of the outer field and the tops of two incuse letters. The mark matches no part of the obverse die, so Diamond judges it most likely a piece of another cent reverse die. Because the fragment did not break away from either die that struck this coin, he calls it the first "exogenous floating die clash."
