1983 (P) Jefferson Nickel - Floating Die Clash FDC-5c-1983P-01

Description

FDC-5c-1983P-01 is a floating die clash on a 1983-P Jefferson nickel, cataloged by Mad Die Clashes. A fragment broke away from the obverse die, and the reverse die struck its working face, leaving the letters US (from TRUST), incuse and in mirror image, in the southwest quarter of the reverse. Margolis and Thurman list the cud as JNC-83P-18 in their 2001 Cud Book Supplement, and Cuds on Coins lists it as CU-5c-1983-01. MDC splits the clash into FDC-5c-1983P-01A and FDC-5c-1983P-01B: in May 2014 Kevin Bridgeman found that the mint replaced the broken obverse die but kept the slightly damaged reverse die in use, creating a new die pairing with the B designation.
