Description

Continuing the 1976 Philadelphia cud census at its third position, CU-1C-1976-03 records yet another rim break on a Lincoln Memorial cent die from this Bicentennial year. Each entry in the cud catalog represents a distinct die that reached terminal failure — the point at which a fatigue crack in the hardened steel propagated far enough to cause a section of the rim to separate entirely from the die face. The detached fragment left a cavity that produced a raised, formless mass of extruded planchet metal on every coin struck from the damaged die until it was detected and pulled from service.
