Description

Opening the 1976 Philadelphia Mint cud census, CU-1C-1976-01 is the first documented rim break for Lincoln Memorial cents struck at Philadelphia during the Bicentennial year. This variety carries the cross-reference numbers JCc-75D_33, with a documentation date of May 8, 2017 — the JCc notation indicating recognition in the JC cud catalog alongside the primary Cuds on Coins designation. A cud error arises when a section of the die rim fractures and separates completely, leaving an open cavity at the die's edge that fills with planchet metal on subsequent strikes. The result is a raised, featureless mass along the affected section of the coin's rim — an error type that is immediately recognizable even without magnification in many cases.
