1974 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-001

Description

Identified as 1974 1¢ WDDR-001 by the Wexler Team, this doubled die reverse variety from the Philadelphia Mint displays a close Class II spread directed towards the center on the bottom of the letters of ONE CENT, with the spread increasing slightly from left to right. Close doubling also shows on the designer's initials FG (Frank Gasparro). Class II doubling results from a slight rotational displacement of the hub between successive impressions during the die-making process, and the directional spread toward the center indicates the pivot point was located away from the denomination — producing a fanning effect that intensifies across the width of the inscription. What makes WDDR-001 particularly notable is the extensive network of die cracks documented on the reverse, indicating the die was in an advanced state of deterioration. A die crack runs down the last column of the Memorial with a large die chip at the bottom of that column, and a die scratch runs north to south near the right edge of the Memorial roof. Thin die cracks appear on all but the third, fourth, and fifth columns. Additional cracks run from the upper left through the E in UNITED and out to the rim, along the base of the Memorial steps starting under the second column and extending all the way to the right Memorial base point, on the top of the posts on either side of the steps, and from the left Memorial base to the rim. This constellation of cracks paints a portrait of a die under severe mechanical stress — likely nearing the end of its operational life when the documented specimens were struck. Philadelphia's 1974 Lincoln cent production of approximately 4.23 billion pieces pushed dies to their limits, and WDDR-001's crack network provides a vivid record of that attrition. No other cross-reference designations are known beyond the Wexler attribution.
