Description

Documented by VarietyVista under UVC-460 and DMR-005, this 1973-S Proof Kennedy Half Dollar doubled die reverse exhibits light spread on STATES OF AMERICA, the stars positioned under those letters, and the stars between the rays above E PLURIBUS UNUM. The Kennedy Half Dollar, bearing Gilroy Roberts's portrait and Frank Gasparro's heraldic eagle reverse, has been a proof set staple since 1964. This variety is tracked across three die stages: Stage A shows both reverse and obverse in an early die state, Stage B is recorded at mid-die state though unconfirmed, and Stage C represents a late die state also awaiting confirmation. The progression from early to late die state matters for collectors, as doubling characteristics can appear differently depending on how much wear the die has accumulated. The 1973-S proof half was struck exclusively at San Francisco for annual proof sets, and the light spread on multiple design elements suggests a subtle but consistent hub misalignment during die preparation.
