1973-S Doubled Die Obverse DDO-002
Error
Description
Proof-only and subtle, DDO-002 on the 1973-S Kennedy Half Dollar presents light spread on IN GOD and LIB of LIBERTY — a subtle displacement best observed under magnification against the reflective proof fields. Cataloged as UVC-342 with DMR-004, the variety has been tracked across three die stages: Stage A in early die state (unconfirmed), Stage B with both obverse and reverse at mid-die state, and Stage C in late die state (unconfirmed). The confirmed mid-die state at Stage B represents the primary diagnostic window, where die markers are established but progressive wear has not yet obscured the doubling. San Francisco produced proof Kennedy Half Dollars exclusively during this period, continuing the arrangement established when proof production moved from Philadelphia in 1968. The 1973-S proof was struck in copper-nickel clad, as the 40% silver composition for Kennedy Half proofs had ended after 1970. Light spread confined to IN GOD and the beginning of LIBERTY requires careful examination — the proof surface aids visibility but the displacement is narrow enough to demand precise magnification and lighting.
