Description
The 1973 (S) Proof Kennedy Half Dollar is a proof half dollar struck at the San Francisco Mint, part of the Kennedy Half Dollars Clad and Silver Proof 1971 to Date series. Total mintage reached 2.8 million. The obverse features John F. Kennedy facing left, based on the presidential medal by Gilroy Roberts, while the reverse displays the Presidential Seal — a heraldic eagle with shield, olive branch, and arrows. Designed by Gilroy Roberts/Frank Gasparro. Struck in 75% copper, 25% nickel over a pure copper center, weighing 11.3 grams, 30.61 mm in diameter, with a 150 reeds edge. Cataloged as PCGS #6809. From 1971 onward, Kennedy Half Dollars were struck in copper-nickel clad composition. Silver proof versions have been available since 1992. The 50th Anniversary (2014) saw special gold and silver editions. Satin finish versions were struck from 2005-2010.
