1973-D Variety WMHR-001

Description

WMHR-001 on the 1973-D Washington Quarter carries the CONECA SD-1-R-II-C+VI classification and represents the Denver Mint entry in the penultimate year of the documented SD-1 master hub range. The SD-1 hub — defined by the pointed leaf to the left of the arrowheads — produced working dies that were used at Denver alongside those used at Philadelphia, making the 1973-D entry a direct Denver-side complement to the 1973-P WMHR-001. The hub-level doubling expressed as a center-directed spread on QUARTER DOLLAR and the lower wreath is unchanged between the two mints, because both sets of dies descended from the same working master hub. Only the individual die-level markers — scratches, gouges, chips — would differ between any given 1973-P and 1973-D specimen. This copper-nickel clad business strike was produced at the Denver Mint. Working dies with the exact same doubling are known to exist for the years 1968 through 1974 from all three Mints including proof coins. Differences in the appearance of the doubling will result from master hub wear, master die wear, working hub wear, working die wear, as well as coin wear. A second similar doubled master hub exists for this time period with the main difference being the leave directly to the left of the arrowheads. On the second doubled master hub that leave is rounded at the top.
