Description

First documented rim cud for the 1973 Denver Mint Washington Quarter, this variety records the loss of part of the die's rim gutter, which appears on the coin as a raised interruption in the design rim that tracks the rim's course. The 1973-D Washington Quarter was struck in copper-nickel clad composition — the standard since 1965 when silver was removed from circulating coinage — and Denver's production volume ensured numerous die pairs were consumed during the year's output. Rim cuds on Washington Quarters occur with moderate frequency, as the coin's size and the forces involved in striking clad planchets subject die rims to considerable mechanical stress over extended runs.
