1973-D Doubled Die Obverse DDO-006
Error
Description
Medium extra thickness on WE TRUST, RTY of LIBERTY, and the hair at the back of Kennedy's head identifies this 1973-D Kennedy Half Dollar DDO-006, a Denver Mint business strike in copper-nickel clad composition. The doubling manifests as bolder lettering and a thickened hair profile where the secondary hub impression overlapped the primary, creating elements that appear heavier on one side. Die markers UVC-380 and DMR-008 anchor the attribution within the VarietyVista system. Three die stages track the die through service: Stage A in Early Die State preserves the doubling at its crispest, Stage B at Mid Die State remains unconfirmed, and Stage C at Late Die State is also unconfirmed — indicating confirmed examples exist primarily from early production before accumulated wear softened the features. Kennedy Half Dollars after 1970 were struck in copper-nickel clad rather than the 40% silver composition used from 1965 to 1970, and Denver's high-volume production generated numerous die pairs. Six cataloged DDOs for the 1973-D date demonstrates sustained interest in Kennedy Half variety research across all mint facilities.
