Description

Fourth documented rim cud for the 1973 Denver Mint Kennedy Half Dollar, this variety demonstrates recurring die rim failure during a production run that generated considerable volume. A rim cud represents the loss of part of the die's rim gutter: on the finished coin it appears as a raised interruption in the design rim that tracks the rim's course. Four rim cuds from a single date indicates multiple dies developed this structural failure, consistent with extended press runs where dies are pushed toward the end of their service life. The 1973-D was struck in copper-nickel clad composition, continuing the alloy transition from 1971 when 40% silver was discontinued for business strikes.
