Description

Fourth documented rim cud for the 1973 Denver Mint Kennedy Half Dollar, this variety demonstrates recurring die rim failure during a production run that generated considerable volume. A rim cud forms when a section of the die at the rim edge fractures and separates, leaving a cavity that fills with metal to produce a raised featureless mass along the rim of the finished coin. Four rim cuds from a single date indicates multiple dies developed this structural failure, consistent with extended press runs where dies are pushed toward the end of their service life. The 1973-D was struck in copper-nickel clad composition, continuing the alloy transition from 1971 when 40% silver was discontinued for business strikes. Denver's half dollar production during the early 1970s supplied commercial channels. Cataloged by Cuds on Coins, CU-50c-1973D-04 joins a growing roster of Kennedy Half Dollar rim cuds spanning the series from its 1964 inception through modern production, documenting the mechanical realities of high-volume coin manufacturing.
