1973-D Doubled Die Obverse DDO-005
Error
Description
Attributed by VarietyVista as UVC-332, DMR-006, this 1973 Denver Mint Kennedy Half Dollar displays medium extra thickness on WE TRUST, the designer's initials, RTY of LIBERTY, and the hair at the back of the head. Three die stages have been documented: Stage A is an unconfirmed early die state; Stage B (early mid-die state) shows numerous light die scratches running northwest on the obverse, with the reverse also in early mid-die state; Stage C is an unconfirmed late die state. The extra thickness across multiple obverse elements indicates hub doubling that added material to the design features during die preparation. Struck in copper-nickel clad composition, the 1973-D Kennedy Half Dollar is part of the post-1970 clad series that replaced the 40% silver composition used from 1965 through 1970. Gilroy Roberts designed the Kennedy obverse portrait, introduced in 1964 following President Kennedy's assassination. The medium extra thickness on DDO-005 is distributed across both lettering and portrait details, giving collectors multiple attribution points to confirm the variety.
