1972-S Doubled Die Reverse DDR-005
Error
Description
On this 1972-S Proof Kennedy Half Dollar, light spread appears on UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, HALF DOLLAR, and all stars in the circle surrounding the heraldic eagle — a broad distribution touching both lettering and the star border. Die markers UVC-484 and DMR-008 anchor attribution. Three die stages document the die's service: Stage A at Early Die State, Stage B at Mid Die State (unconfirmed), and Stage C at Late Die State (unconfirmed). Struck at San Francisco on polished dies, the proof surface quality means even light hub doubling registers clearly against mirror-like fields. Gilroy Roberts's obverse portrait and Frank Gasparro's heraldic eagle reverse both feature fine detail that can reveal subtle displacement. The spread across all stars in the circle is noteworthy because the stars encircle the entire eagle, meaning doubling affects a ring of elements at consistent distance from the rim. This uniform radial distribution suggests the secondary hub impression displaced peripheral elements broadly rather than concentrating on one sector. The fifth cataloged DDR for the 1972-S proof half places it within a manageable catalog for date specialists.
