The involvement of Monticello's right edge is architecturally specific — Felix Schlag's rendering of Jefferson's Virginia estate includes straight vertical lines defining the building's corners, and these precise geometric edges provide sensitive diagnostic surfaces where even light hub displacement creates measurable offset. While most Jefferson Nickel DDR varieties confine detectable doubling to inscriptions and denomination text, DDR-002's building-edge doubling demonstrates that the hub misalignment affected the pictorial design elements as well. As a proof coin struck at the San Francisco Mint, this nickel was produced on polished planchets with mirror-finish dies, and the proof surface quality enhances visibility of subtle doubling on both the text and the architectural lines. The 1972 Proof Jefferson Nickel was available exclusively through annual proof sets in standard copper-nickel composition.
