Description

Spanning four distinct reverse elements including an architectural detail, DDR-001 on the 1972-S Proof Jefferson Nickel exhibits light spread on UNUM, the right building edge of Monticello, AMERICA, and the last O of MONTICELLO. Die markers UVC-1433 and DMR-005 fingerprint this working die. The involvement of the right building edge — a vertical architectural line in Felix Schlag's Monticello rendering — alongside three inscription areas demonstrates that the hub displacement affected both text and pictorial elements of the reverse design. The building edge provides an especially clean diagnostic because straight architectural lines translate even minor hub offset into a visibly doubled line with measurable separation, whereas curved or complex letter forms can sometimes mask subtle displacement. The scattered distribution of affected areas — UNUM at upper left, the building edge at center right, AMERICA at upper right, and the terminal O of MONTICELLO at lower center — indicates a hub displacement vector that crossed multiple zones of the die face rather than concentrating in a single region. As a proof coin struck at the San Francisco Mint, this nickel was produced on polished planchets with mirror-finish dies, and the reflective proof surfaces enhance visibility of even light spread by providing high contrast between the design elements and the mirrored fields. The 1972-S proof was available exclusively through annual proof sets in standard copper-nickel composition. As DDR-001, this variety holds the primary reverse catalog position for the date.
