1972 Lincoln Memorial Cent - Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-007 / DDO-007

Description

1972 WDDO-007 is a doubled die obverse on the 1972 Lincoln Memorial cent, cataloged by the Wexler team and by VarietyVista as DDO-007. Both catalogs give it the Cherrypickers number FS-107 (033.57); Wexler writes it FS 01-1972-107. Wexler records a counterclockwise Class I spread on LIBERTY, IN GOD WE TRUST and the date. Obverse stage A has a die scratch running NW to the rim from the upper left of the W in WE, a small die gouge jutting from the rim under the B of the designer's initials, a small gouge below the R of LIBERTY and another just beneath the left curl of the 9. In stage B the doubling on IN GOD WE TRUST and LIBERTY looks much mushier, and only a small remnant of the rim gouge under the B survives. In stage C the die has been very heavily abraded: many die scratches run SW to NE both ahead of and behind the bust, a strong one runs WNW from the top left of the I in IN, two short strong ones run NE from the top of the head, between the letters of WE, and in TRUST two vertical scratches separate T from R, with one more separating R from U. On the reverse, stage A shows a small die gouge just above the Memorial roof beneath the N of UNUM. In stage B that gouge is gone, a small gouge touches the middle of the right side of the U in UNITED, and a dot sits left of the top of the first column. In stage C the reverse is heavily abraded; the gouge at the U of UNITED remains, and the main new die scratches start at the top of the left cornice (running NW), at the base of the S in PLURIBUS (running southeast), and at the right side of the roof over the right cornice (running ESE). John A. Wexler submitted the coin. CONECA lists the die as 7-O-I and Crawford as CDDO-007; its Coppercoins number is 1972P-1DO-007. VarietyVista also credits John A. Wexler and describes a medium spread on IN GOD WE TRUST, on LIBER in LIBERTY and on 972 of the date. It identifies the obverse as its design variety ODV-027a (Not Re-Engraved) and uses marker codes UVC-2290 and DMR-010.
