1972 Lincoln Memorial Cent - Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-005

Description

1972 WDDO-005 is a doubled die obverse on the 1972 Lincoln Memorial cent, cataloged by the Wexler team. A very close Class I spread in the clockwise (CW) direction shows on IN GOD WE TRUST, and there is more doubling on the lower LIB of LIBERTY and on the 72 of the date. At obverse Stage A, a gouge reaches ESE from the rim above the right part of GOD's O, and a short scratch runs ESE from the upper right of the E in WE. Just right of the lower nose there is a small gouge (dot), and a short diagonal gouge sits just over the left end of the 7's top. Above the base of the 2 are two short marks that resemble the doubling on 1972 WDDO-009. At obverse Stage B there is a short vertical gouge midway between the middles of the I and N in IN, plus a rim cud at about 2:30. On the reverse at Stage A, a small gouge lies right of the middle of UNITED's I, a short diagonal gouge sits in the lower third bay of the Memorial, and SSW-to-NNE scratches appear near the centers of the first and second bays. At reverse Stage B, the Stage A markers are weaker. Brian Allen submitted Stage A, and Peter Beane submitted Stage B. Crawford lists it as CDDO-010, and its Coppercoins number is 1972P-1DO-014. Wexler includes it in its "Best Of" varieties.
