Description
The 1972 Eisenhower Dollar - Type 2 represents a Philadelphia Mint issue from the Eisenhower Dollars 1971-1978 series. The U.S. Mint's 75.9 million is the 1972 Philadelphia dollar as a whole; the Type 2 coins are an unrecorded part of it. The obverse features Dwight D. Eisenhower facing left and the reverse displays an eagle landing on the moon with an olive branch in its talons, commemorating the Apollo 11 lunar landing. The 1972 Philadelphia dollars come with three reverses: Type 1 shows three islands to the right of Florida, Type 2 has no islands below Florida, and Type 3 shows islands below Florida, with stronger relief (NGC). The Philadelphia Mint, America's oldest coin-making facility, has struck coins continuously since 1792. Estimated market value ranges from $1 to $7 depending on grade and condition. Struck in 75% copper, 25% nickel over a pure copper center, weighing 22.68 grams, 38.1 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #97409.
