1971-S Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-002

Description

Second in the Wexler doubled die reverse catalog for the 1971-S proof Kennedy Half Dollar, WDDR-002 displays a moderate Class V clockwise spread from a pivot point at approximately 12 o'clock on the stars, HALF DOLLAR, AMERICA, the designer's initials FG, the arrows, and the olive branch. The clockwise rotation from the top of the die means that elements near the bottom and sides of the reverse show the greatest displacement. Frank Gasparro's reverse design — identified by the FG initials — features the heraldic eagle with arrows and olive branch, and the spread across these fine design elements is visible under moderate magnification. As a proof issue struck at the San Francisco Mint, this clad-composition half dollar was produced with polished dies on specially prepared planchets.
