1971-S Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-002

Description

The 1971-S Proof Jefferson Nickel WDDR-002 is a Class II Distorted Hub Doubling variety. A spread toward the rim shows on UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and E PLURIBUS UNUM on the reverse. This coin is notable for being a triple-variety piece: it is simultaneously cataloged as a doubled die reverse (WDDR-002), a doubled die obverse (WDDO-002), and a repunched mintmark (WRPM-001 Southeast) — all occurring on the same proof die. Reverse die markers include a diagonal die scratch to the right of the long right window of Monticello and two diagonal die scratches inside the long right window. The obverse die, also a doubled die, carries the WDDO-002 attribution. The 1971-S proof nickel was struck at the San Francisco Mint on polished planchets to collector proof standards. Jefferson Nickels of this era bear a copper-nickel clad composition — the wartime silver alloy having ended in 1945. The convergence of three simultaneous varieties on a single die pairing makes this an exceptional example for Jefferson Nickel specialists.
